Dr. Dimitris Bertsimas has been a professor at MIT for nearly 30 years, and is world renowned for his work in optimizing complex systems through a process known as Robust Optimization. The following are just some of his impressive accomplishments:

Dr. Dimitris Bertsimas, Co-Founder, Chief Scientist
Dr. Bertsimas is the co-founder of Benefits Science and serves in the position of Chief Scientist. He is the Boeing Professor and co-director of the Operations Research Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he has been a member of the faculty since 1988. Formerly a Senior Portfolio manager and the head of quantitative investments at RiverSource Investments where he was responsible for managing $12 billion in mutual funds, separate accounts, and hedge funds. In 1998 Dr. Bertsimas co-founded Dynamic Ideas LLC whose assets were sold to American Express in 2002. He has over 10 years of experience in healthcare analytics and has written scientific papers on the topic. He has received numerous research awards and he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Bertsimas has written over 130 papers in optimization, data mining, applied probability and quantitative finance and he has written 3 textbooks that are used in over 40 universities around the world. Dr. Bertsimas has a PhD in Applied Mathematics and Operations Research from MIT.
Stephen Sofoul, Co-Founder, President
Mr. Sofoul is the co-founder of Benefits Science and serves as the President of the company. He previously served as the President of a specialized healthcare consulting firm based in The Woodlands, TX. In addition to his experience as a start-up specialist, Mr. Sofoul has led organizations in both the manufacturing and services sectors. His previous experience includes serving as the Vice-President of a heavy equipment manufacturing firm based in Houston, TX as well as managing director of a financial consulting firm based in The Woodlands, TX. Mr. Sofoul received his B.S. in Finance and received an M.B.A. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Mr. Sofoul resides in Boston, MA and holds a life & health insurance license, life & health insurance counselor license, GBA (Group Benefits Associate) designation.
Sid Mann, Co-Founder
Mr. Mann is the co-founder of Benefits Science and serves as the Vice-President of the company. He previously served as the Vice-President of PeopleManage Pro, a leading healthcare consulting firm based in The Woodlands, TX. Mr. Mann has extensive experience building and managing sales organizations in multiple industries. His previous experience includes serving as the President of a heavy equipment manufacturing firm based in Houston, TX as well as a managing partner of a financial consulting firm based in The Woodlands, TX. Mr. Mann began his career as a sales manager with AT&T in Sandy, UT and received his B.S. in Finance from Brigham Young University. Mr. Mann resides in Conroe, TX and holds a life & health insurance license.
Bryan Hawkins, Director of Data Management
Mr. Hawkins is responsible for client care data management coordination. He works closely with the client TPA’s to facilitate the data transfer and project analysis. Prior to joining Benefits Science, Mr. Hawkins spent 7 years with Wells Fargo as a Loan Consultant. Mr. Hawkins received a B.S. from Baylor University in Finance and Quantitative Business Analysis and was a scholarship member of the Baylor University Football Team.
Brian Mann, Data Analyst
Mr. Mann manages the onboarding of new clients and serves as a Data Analyst with responsibilities for the analysis and reporting of client data. Before working with Benefits Science, Mr. Mann was an implementation specialist at Epic Systems. He coordinated the installation of software to maintain electronic medical records for hospitals across the county. He received a B.S. from Brigham Young University in engineering.
Spyros Potamianos, Ph.D., Information Technology – Technical Manager
Dr. Potamianos is the I.T. Technical Manager at Benefits Science and is responsible for product development, systems architecture, systems integration and deployment. During his career he worked as a Software Engineer in Hewlett Packard Laboratories in Palo Alto, the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization, and as a Member of Technical Staff in Bell Labs/Hellas. He also served as an advisor for the General Secretary of Telecommunications in the Greek Ministry of Transport and Communications. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley and his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. He has published articles in leading technical journals in the field of databases.
Pavlos Polydoras, Senior Software Architect
Mr. Polydoras works as Senior Software Architect at Benefits Science and is responsible for software design, testing and implementation of system core services. His working experience began with European research projects mainly revolving around Information Retrieval. As part of his national army service, he worked as a software developer in the Information Systems Support Center of the Hellenic Army. During the last decade he has been working in the industry both as freelancer and company employee, participating in several enterprise projects. His specialties include SQL/NoSQL technologies, Query Optimization, Enterprise Java, Web Technologies, SOA, Distributed/Parallel Systems, HA/HP Systems and PKI. He holds an MSc in Information Technology from the Department of Informatics, University of Athens.
Nataly Youssef, Ph.D.
Nataly is a Co-Founding Partner of MyA Health and also acts as the Head of Analytics at Benefits Science Technologies. She has expertise in predictive and prescriptive analytics, with special focus on supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques as well as robust optimization under risk. She participated in developing a MOOC – The Analytics Edge – and taught executive MBAs during her doctoral studies at MIT. Nataly has a PhD in Operations Research and Analytics from MIT.
Geo Thomas, Co-Founder, IT Manager
Mr. Thomas has over 16 years of hand-on experience in software development life cycle (SDLC) and Design software components. He has experience in converting user stories to programmer friendly pseudo code and architecting SOA and middleware frameworks considering both technical and functional challenges. Mr. thomas has worked closely with Sr Director and AVP stakeholders and leading implementation of Coeus at many high profile research universities including John Hopkins University, Weill Cornell Medical College, Purdue University, Indian University and Michigan State University. he has a B-Tech in Computer Engineering from Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Cochin, India.
Marc D. Kutter, Partner, Director of Sales
Mr. Kutter is responsible for strategic distribution relationships and leads national sales efforts. He has led companies in employee benefits, financial services, and healthcare industries as an executive in various strategy, business development, and operational roles ranging in size from early stage start-ups to large corporations. In addition, Mr. Kutter proudly served as an Infantry Officer in the United States Army, serving in the 10th Mountain Division and the 82nd Airborne Division in the Middle East, Central America, and the Balkans. Marc earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Marc also serves on several boards for early stage companies mentoring entrepreneurs and giving back to the community by working with several non-profit organizations.
Ray Melvin, National Sales Director
Mr. Melvin serves as Sales Director and is responsible for helping coordinate company growth through marketing, sales and long-term strategy predominantly in the eastern half of the U.S. He provides leadership nationally in operational alignment within the various areas of Benefits Science. Prior to joining Benefits Science, Mr. Melvin spent over 26 years with Aflac, serving in a number of field positions specializing in recruiting, training, sales and service all with an emphasis on national accounts. Mr. Melvin graduated from Vincennes University.
Tish Carman, Director of Customer Experience
Mrs. Carman serves as liaison between our sales team, data acquisition and analytics team to assure our clients receive a superior customer experience. She assists with on-boarding needs such as contracting and implementation. Prior to working with Benefits Science, Mrs. Carman was a broker in the Voluntary Benefits industry for 8 years and holds life and health licenses in Georgia as well as multiple other states. She graduated with a B.S. in Education from the University of Tennessee.
Kevin Sofoul, Privacy Office
Mr. Sofoul serves as the HIPAA Privacy Officer, overseeing all ongoing activities related to the development, implementation, and maintenance of, and adherence to policies and procedures covering the privacy of, and access to, Protected Health Information in compliance with HIPAA. Prior to joining Benefits Science, Mr. Sofoul worked in Fire and Emergency Services for The Woodlands and the City of Houston. He finished his Emergency Services career as a paramedic working in Riyadh Saudi Arabia. Kevin holds the life & health insurance license.
Mark H. Hufham, Director of Marketing
Mr. Hufham is responsible for marketing/creative strategies. He has 35 years of marketing/advertising experience, serving as CMO of an Atlanta based marketing firm serving a broad range of industries, with specialties in technology, finance, travel & hospitality and healthcare. Mark has held senior leadership roles in more than a dozen startup ventures where he has built and executed business development strategies, assembled management teams and coordinated operations, including product, brand and channel development through comprehensive marketing programs; market research and competitive analysis, content creation through plan development and implementation.
