Dr. Bertsimas was recently the keynote speaker at the INFORMS Conference in San Francisco. During his speech he illustrated how solving problems using mixed-integer optimization (MIO) has improved in the last few decades. From 1991 to 2013, the speedup for solving MIO problems has been 580,000 times. A problem that would have taken a computer seven years to solve in 1991 can now be solved by the same computer using MIO in less than one second. In that time, the speedup in hardware has been 320,000 times. Taken together, these advances represent a total speedup in solving MIO problems of 200 billion times. This is the advanced math and computing power Benefits Science makes available to our clients.
